An RTI reply with regard to the dog sterlisation surgeries conducted by Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has disturbed activists as it revealed that the civic body has sterlised 4,648 dogs between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015.

Thane activist Satyajit Shah has raised questions over the sterlisation as he said, “I got to know that they work for 250 days a year from 11 am to 5 pm every day. Considering the number of days and work hours they put in, it seems unlikely that so many dogs would have been sterlised in the time frame mentioned. In addition to this, the TMC has only one dog catcher van which was bought in 2006. Sterilising one dog takes four days and it is not a short process.”

Shah also said that on an average 30 people are bitten by stray dogs every day in Thane city alone.

However, Plant and Animal Welfare's Society founder Nilesh Banage supported the TMC figures saying that the civic body had a leproscopy technique used to sterilise dogs. It makes their work easier.
