Chowk meetings to rescue TMT
Deepa Sarna Gawli
Members of the TMT Bachao Kruti Samitee are seeking to create awareness among commuters about the abysmal state of Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) through ‘chowk meetings’ or outdoor gatherings. Their first such meeting will be held at 7pm on August 24 at the Thane SATIS (Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme).
Keeping in mind the problems faced by Thane’s bus commuters, a group of citizens from Thane had come together to form the TMT Bachao Kruti Samitee.
In recent times, TMT has faced a severe cash crunch, leading to the deteriorating condition and frequent breakdown of its buses, and the piling up of its employees’ uncleared dues.
The problems faced by Thane’s commuters regarding TMT were highlighted in a meeting called by the members of the group with the general manager of the company, Devidas Tekale, on Wednesday.
“For several years now, the population of Thane has increased manifold, and geographically too the city has grown by leaps and bounds. However, the number of TMT buses running in Thane city has decreased. Also, TMT’s employees have not received their dues for several years. Tekale assured us that the defunct buses at the depot would be repaired,” said Satyajit Shah, a samitee member.
“By joining hands, we can save our lifeline from collapsing,” added Shah.
The samitee members are of the opinion that once the buses are plying again, TMT’s revenues will increase.
“We require additional funds for vehicles that need major repairs. Once we get these funds, the buses will be fixed,” said Tekale.
The members have decided to conduct ‘chowk meetings’ at various locations across Thane including Brahmand, Kalwa, Kopri, Lokmanya Nagar and Kisan Nagar.
