Dug-up internal roads irk locals

Thane: With monsoon fast approaching, the problems of battered roads will only increase. Poor maintenance and repeated digging of internal city road has irked locals, who complain that the contractor-bureaucrat nexus is at the root of all the problems. The controversial contract for widening and upgrading the Glady Alvares road near Hiranandani Meadows continues to dominate the collective minds of the locals.

"The Vasant Vihar junction is a highly accident prone area with vehicles rushing in from four sides. Moreover, there are electric poles on the road, which could lead to fatalities during night," complained Mahesh Nawar, a local.

Citizen activist Satyajit Shah, who has been waging a battle against the poor quality of the internal roads pointed out to the deplorable condition of the road leading to Saket complex from the Bhiwandi bypass. He said hundreds of families suffer because of bad roads and repeated complaints have failed to get the TMC to get their act together.

"When President Pranab Mukherjee visited Kalwa, every patch was concretised. However, when the local tax-payer seeks basic roads his pleas are not heeded to," Shah said.

Residents of Vasant Vihar said the road opposite the Vasant Vihar School has been freshly dug up. "This stretch has been done up thrice in a years time. The digging operations started without any notice and some of the motorist could not get their vehicles out because by the time they came out in the morning there was a huge pile of mud blocking the vehicle," Nawar said.
