Anti-stray dog movement to take its drive to the next level by launching groups in each local body

Irked by the laxity on the part of the government and enforcement agencies in reining in the stray dog menace, the anti-stray dog movement is planning to launch an elaborate exercise involving hundreds of ‘people’s collectives’ in Ernakulam.

Official start

Come November 1 and the movement will get an official start with members staging a dharna in front of the Kochi Corporation office.

“We want to take the movement to a bigger level. We are getting tremendous support from the public, who are fed up with the rising incidents of deaths and injuries caused by stray dogs,” said Jose Maveli, a key campaigner.

The movement is planning to launch people’s collectives in each local body. Mr. Maveli said the groups would include people from various walks of life. “The aim is to form collectives involving people from various walks of life. The stray dog menace has turned alarming. We have no other option but to launch a bigger movement demanding the eradication of the dog menace,” he said.

Each collective will identify areas affected by the menace. They will form squads to keep vigil against animals attacking people. The anti-stray dog movement will also offer legal aid to persons who take the lead in culling stray dogs.

Public protest

The move to form people’s collectives received a boost, after the public opposed attempts to arrest the members of the anti-stray dog movement at Varkala, where an elderly man died after being attacked by stray dogs. Mr. Maveli urged dog lovers to come forward and provide shelters to stray dogs, rather than issuing statements that stray dogs should not be culled.

“Who will take care of the commoner on the streets who has no one for support after being attacked by stray dogs?” he asked.

Stray dogs maul sleeping 90-year-old to death in Kerala

Stray dogs claimed another life in Kerala on Wednesday with a pack mauling a 90-year-old man to death at Varkala here. Raghavan had been asleep on his verandah when he was attacked in the morning. He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the medical college hospital here where he died at around 2.55pm. The gruesome incident comes in the wake of the August 20 death of a 65-year old woman, Siluvamma, at Pulluvila here due to excessive bleeding caused by dog bites. An SC-appointed committee headed by former Kerala high court judge S Siri Jagan -in its report submitted to the apex court last week -had sought immediate steps against the menace. Residents said Raghavan, who had been living in his son Murali's house, had a habit of sleeping on the verandah. His daughter-in-law had left the house, which did not have a wall surrounding the compound, to buy milk when he was attacked by four to five dogs.
A woman in the neighbourhood saw the dogs and alerted other residents who drove away the pack. They said they saw blood dripping from the dogs' mouths when they scared them away . Raghavan's face was disfigured beyond recognition as the dogs had bitten off his nose and lips.
Hospital sources said Raghavan had lost a considerable amount of blood, leading to hypoxia, a deficiency of oxygen in the tissues. He had breathed blood into his lungs Raghavan is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.
